Our History

Konni, traditionally known as 'Konniyoor', has been lulled, sustained and nourished by the pure waters of the Achankovil River. St. George Orthodox Maha Edavaka, Konni, is situated at the very heart of Konni, as a beacon of heavenly light and blessing.

At a time when there was no Christian Churches at the area where our predecessors could attend the Holy Qurbana, they used to go to the Church at Kadampanadu, a far-away place, enduring great difficulty for the purpose. Understanding these hardships, they built a temporary Church building made up of mud, bamboo poles and coconut leaves at the site of the present church in the year 1910.

In this connection it is to be noted that St. Peter's Orthodox Church at Kizhavalloor, a nearby place, was established 175 year ago.

In Kollavarsham 1079 Mr. Oommen Varghese, Mannikoikal, Konni. donated I Acre 90 Cents of land for the purpose of establishing a Church, and the above mentioned temporary church building was built there. On Friday 6 May 1910 (ie. 1085 Medam 24) the first Holy Qurbana was offered at the Church.

As this shed-like Church had degenerated into a dilapidated condition, the construction of as big church building adopting the modern architectural style of that time was started in 1927 and completed in 1932.
